A Trip of a Lifetime! Europe from a Photographers Eye 📷

EuropeTrip_Cover.jpg

It's been over a month since returning from my trip around Europe with my partner Corey and WOW has that month flown! We've been run off our feet at the LP HQ but loving being busy coming back from holidays.

I wanted to share with you all some of the amazing memories I captured along my journey and some of the reasons why I loved each place. If you're thinking about going to Europe you have to check this out!

Ireland

We spent our first day in Dublin, visiting the Guinness Storehouse, pouring a perfect pint, exploring the alleyways of the Temple Bar area before hiring a car and ventured out to countryside Cavan to my Nana's house. 93 years of age and still the most humorous, loving and amazing woman. It was an amazing time seeing family (Dad being one of 7 so the family is large) and made the 3 hour trip to Giants Causeway to experience the beauty of this natural wonder, 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. Always of favourite of mine is the beautiful Cabra Castle and we couldn't leave Ireland without having a true Irish breakfast with my family!

Berlin

Berlin was such a historical, beautiful, creative and art filled city! This was one of our favourite places that we visited. We enjoyed great food including pork knuckle, curry wurst and schnitzels, we consumed cheap alcohol while enjoying the beauty of the monuments by the river (you can drink in public!), immersing ourselves in the many monuments of Berlin's history including the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag building, Berlin Wall, East Side Gallery, Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Cathedral, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin TV tower and many more. We walked at least 20km each day exploring the many sights and hidden gems. A MUST VISIT!

Amsterdam

Amsterdam was such a beautiful place, with pops of green, red and blue colours, a maze of canals which made for beautiful imagery and lots of history and culture. We had a relaxing two days visiting the attractions such as the "I am Amsterdam" sign, Ricksmuseum, the flower market, the Red Light District with time left over to just enjoy the beautiful sights. Watch out for the manic bike riders, everywhere!

Paris

Paris was a much larger city than I ever imagined it to be. It was widespread, with many sights to see and thriving with tourists, we did 20km a day walking, easy! I have always wanted to see the Notre-Dame Cathedral, especially after watching the movie the Hunchback of Notre Dam, it was beautiful. Corey and I were lucky enough to organise a few months in advance to meet up with my best friend Nikea (friends since we were like 5) and her husband Michael to explore some of Paris together. It was amazing having friends to visit these wonderful places with including the Eiffel Tower, the Catacombs and the Louve Museum.

Switzerland

The highlight of our trip was the stunning Switzerland! Corey and I have been dreaming of seeing this place for a long time and the moment we began crossing the border from France and began witnessing the mountains, blue lakes and greenery our mouths were on the floor. I will let the images speak for themselves!

We didn't stay in the city areas as we wanted to experience the real culture and beautiful sights. We based ourselves from Interlaken for the first couple of days allowing us to train to the town of Grindewald to see Grindewald First, exploring the town of Interlaken and it's lookout Harder Kulm, then onto the valley towns of Lauterbrunnen and Murren. Lautterbrunnen was like something from a movie, waterfalls showering over the cliffs of the valley, glaciers melting into large waterfalls which we were able to walk through, base jumpers and hang gliders flying through the clouds. I was on cloud 9 this whole time. However, be prepared to be eating food from the grocery store and making your own meals as everything is beyond expensive (e.g. Chicken breast was $50/kg!). Murren was a little town on top of the valley with no cars, hardly any noise to be heard and is up in the clouds! We spent a whole afternoon sitting on a hill watching hang gliders run over us and jump off the cliff while having a beer and falling asleep (this was living). I can not recommend enough for people to visit these beautiful, unreal locations!

Rome

A historical city of beautiful ruins, pebbled streets, great food and some of the best monuments. We spent a couple of days in Rome before getting aboard our cruise ship to the Greek Islands so we wanted to relax while also seeing the sites. Our accommodation was located right across the road from the Colosseum so we were within easy walking distance of these beautiful places!

Greek Isles Cruise

To finish our holiday, we booked a Royal Caribbean 9 night Greek Isles Cruise which included stops at Sicily where we visited Taormina, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes Island,  Naples where we visited Island of Capri and Athens. I witnessed some of the most beautiful coastal scenes I have ever seen and lapped up the sun while I had the chance. We did most of the exploring on our own rather than going through the boat excursions as we purchased a sim overseas and research our modes of transport. This made for a very cost effective way of seeing things!

After reflecting on the trip, I don't think I would have changed anything considering I planned it all myself. We had such a great time with a balance of sites, relaxing, exploring and enjoying ourselves. If anyone has any questions regarding the planning or are wanting to purchase any of the images as digitals/prints etc feel free to send me an email on emily@lifeportraits.photography

The Things We Do And The People We Meet - Thanks To Our Cameras!

God I love my job…. Does it make you cringe when people say that? Well cringe away because I love my job :)

Yes there are good days and bad days, great jobs and challenges, laughter and tears of frustration…. but whether it is commercial or consumer photoshoots or running training workshops to professional and amateur photographers, there is one constant that makes my job so exciting and fascinating. The people we meet and the experiences we have as a result.

Last weekend Emily and I travelled back to Clermont to do a series of photographic workshops for Artslink, supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund. It was (as always) great fun with a great bunch of people.

But it also gave me the chance to catch up with someone who started out as an attendee at a few of our workshops and has become a friend, Julie Turner. As well as working on her family cattle farm and breeding Kelpies as working dogs, Julie of Clermont Kelpies is a great photographer and I’ve admired the shots she takes of her working dogs for some time.

So it was with quite a bit of excitement that I got to go and spend a few spare hours in the afternoon out on her family's farm and was rewarded with the remarkabe experience of watching her working Kelpies in action rounding up the cattle and bringing them in to their yards.

I couldn’t resist firing off some shots as we bounced our way across the countryside in her ATV as the dogs leaped in and out of the back as they answered her commands and brought the cattle into line.

A great experience with a wonderful family who I would never have met if it werent for my work as a photographer.

Did I mention that I love my Job :)

Sunrise Mountain Climbs

A 3.30am start, 2 cars of ladies driving an hour to the coast, rugged from head to toe, but all worth it for the beautiful view from the top of Mount Coolum for sunrise.

My friends and I thought we'd make the most of our Sunday morning - yes all 8 of us were on time and no one pulled out haha. We climbed to the top of the mountain with our torches in the dark and waited for the sun to break the horizon. It was the most beautiful view and enjoying it with this beautiful group of ladies made it all the more worthwhile.

Followed by breakfast at Canteen Kitchen & Bar at Coolum Beach. Check out our adventure below :)

All photographed on my Canon m5 with my new early birthday present from Corey, a Canon EF-M 22m f2 lens - AMAZING!

"Up in the air I fly"..... A day in the life of Life Portraits

After photographing commercial portraits for client Josh under our business LP Commercial, I was lucky enough to also have the honour of photographing Josh's family under the portraiture side, Life Portraits.

A rare opportunity I couldn't pass up, Josh went out of his way to pick me up from Archerfield Airport in Brisbane and fly out to Chinchilla. It was an early morning, taking off at 5am, flying out of Brisbane to the view of the sun rising behind us and fog covering parts of the city. I was fortunate enough to be able to capture the journey on my camera as well as footage on my GoPro Hero 5 Black. Josh also records his journeys for YouTube. With both of our footage and images I created the below video insight into my journey.

Upon arriving in Chinchilla, it felt very homely, very much like my hometown of Clermont (which is where I met Josh). I photographed Josh's family nearly 5 years ago when his youngest was a newborn. I was very excited to be meeting the girls again and capturing their personalities, characteristics and their fun antics on the land. Capturing a family in their home environment is a very special thing - you create a story, capture a special moment in time within a home they've come to love. I captured the Adam family in their home environment, with their animals, their gardens, surrounded by stunning rural countryside. I have delivered their gallery for proof and blown away by the results.

The beauty of the Northern NSW Coast: Ballina, Lennox Head & Byron Bay

Being a Central Queensland country girl, I never really ventured out of QLD throughout my childhood (except to the other side of the world to Ireland to see my family). Only in the last 3 years have I started to explore this beautiful country. With 5 days free between Christmas and New Years I couldn't resist the opportunity to get in the car with my partner and explore a new area I hadn't seen before. So... I did some research around the NSW coast, booked a flat on airbnb and away we went.

The NSW coast is an unbelievable location with prestige beaches, breathtaking lookouts, fresh seafood and a mix between the beach lifestyle and relaxed country living. Only a close 2 hours from Brisbane, this is easily a weekend trip away. Below are the places we visited and some of the highlights, also featuring a video of our little adventure.

Ballina

We stayed at Ballina Heights at a lovely house (through airbnb) overlooking the countryside. This was a close 2 min drive to the Ballina Shopping Area with all the shops you would need - Woolworths, Target, Kmart, BWS, Anytime Fitness etc. On our first day we visited the stunning Killen Falls which was only 15 mins from Ballina at Tintenbar and only a short walk down to the water - well worth it!

That afternoon we drove to Shaws Bay and walked the North Wall scenic walk. Capturing a glimpse of some young boys jumping off into the deep waters where the ocean and the Richmond River meet as well as capturing a glimpse of some dolphins swimming in from the ocean. At the peak of the break-wall is Lighthouse beach which seems to be a popular spot for the surfers and also has the Lighthouse beach Cafe and Life Saving Club. There are information plaques along the walk about the history of Ballina for those that like their reading - we did!

We enjoyed some fresh prawns and barra from the local seafood shop and got to see the giant prawn, we played some cricket at the sports field and we even still went to the gym (thanks to Anytime Fitness being all over the world).

Lennox Head

My favourite place was Lennox Head, it's a hidden gem! Tucked away close to Byron but much more quiet and relaxed. Not only did it have a number of beautiful beaches, it is blessed with Lake Ainsworth, a tea tree brown coloured lake right next to the coast. The water is beautiful and warm, calm water for stand up paddle boarding and we made the most of a cheap blow-up radio inflatable from K-mart to enjoy sun-baking in the lake. We admired the views from Pat Morton lookout, where tandem hang gliders were taking in the views of Lenox Point from above. There were locks lining the fences at the top of the lookout which was beautiful, we even found one from a wedding! We went to Sharpes Beach and took a boogie board to ride the waves and enjoyed some fish and chips at Fishy Fishy on the main street.

Byron Bay

This time of year was very busy for Byron due to Falls Festival and the Christmas period. We ventured out at 5am to get to the lighthouse before things got busy and enjoyed the early morning sun, wind and beautiful lookout. We went to the Byron Bay beach for an early swim and packed our own lunch for a picnic. For those wanting to explore Byron I would take advantage of the hop on-hop off bus that goes around Byron from 10am-5.30pm so you can explore all of the town without having to worry about parking.

A big thank you to Discover Ballina: Ballina Coast and Hinterland for their amazing visitor guide that helped us plan our journey - https://www.discoverballina.com.au/visit/

Coldplay lights up Brisbane City

While much of Brisbane flocked to Suncorp Stadium last week for Coldplay, I watched (and listened) from my balcony in Milton. I didn't have a ticket to the show, but I witnessed the concert from a different view. The sound erupted from the stadium across the city and I heard the entire concert from the comfort of my home.

This was an opportunity I could not pass up! I set my camera up and captured this beautiful, tear drawing experience through the lens.

Exploring North Stradbroke Island

I was lucky enough to spend the weekend at North Stradbroke Island camping with my boyfriend to celebrate his Birthday. Stradbroke has been on my Brisbane bucket list and was blown away when I got there! I'd read many blogs about the beautiful landscapes and beaches so I had to bring the camera to capture a few moments along the way.

Being a rather action packed weekend it was hard to step away from the fun and photograph the journey (being in the sand and rain was the major factors) but I managed to capture some of the beautiful spots that I recommend to everyone. See below for some of the amazing locations.

Point Lookout: South Gorge

This location is breathtaking! A perfect wedding ceremony location and we had loads of fun climbing the rocks. Located right next to the Point Lookout Surf Club.

Point Lookout: North Gorge

The North Gorge was the most spectacular walk! We walked along the boardwalk around to Whale Rock Blow Hole through to North Gorge. This is a sight to see! We even caught a gimps of some turtles and whales. This is a MUST SEE!

Deadman's Beach/Frenchmans Beach

All within close proximity to each other we ventured out amongst the rocks and beaches to find the whale watching platforms, through Point Lookout Conservation Area, to Deadman's Beach and around to Frenchmans Beach. We found some amazing caves within the rocks and climbed the cliff to look over the beach! This is another MUST DO! There is even a huge hill perfect for sand boarding (however boogie boards aren't the best, come prepared).
