Boudoir Photography FAQs: 18 Questions Women Ask Before Their First Shoot
A boudoir photoshoot is a private, guided portrait session where you're photographed in lingerie or an outfit that makes you feel powerful, to celebrate yourself or as a gift for someone you love. You don't need experience, a certain body size or a special occasion.
At Life Portraits, 95% of boudoir clients have never done a boudoir shoot before, and we guide every pose so you never have to guess what to do. Nerves are NORMAL, you're in good company. After more than ten years of boudoir photography in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast and across Australia on photoshoot tours, these are the questions we get asked the most, answered honestly.
The basics
What is boudoir photography?
Boudoir photography is intimate, sensual portraiture that celebrates the beauty of the female body. The word comes from the French for a woman's private bedroom or dressing room, but a boudoir shoot isn't about the room. It's about how you feel while you're in it. Sessions can range from soft and romantic to bold and glamorous, and they're always shaped around your comfort level.
Who is boudoir photography for?
Everyone. We photograph women of every age, shape, size and background, and you don't need a reason to book. Some of the most common reasons are:
A self-love celebration. No occasion needed, just a decision that you're worth it.
A bridal or anniversary gift. A romantic surprise for your partner, or a private keepsake for yourself before the wedding.
A milestone birthday. Stepping into a new decade in an unapologetic way.
An intimate couples session. Passionate, connected images that celebrate your bond.
A fitness and boudoir crossover. For women who want strength and glamour in the same frame.
Do I need to be a certain size or "in shape" to book a boudoir shoot?
No. You don't need to lose weight, be competition-ready or reach any goal first. Waiting for a more "ready" version of yourself is the most common reason women put it off, and it's the one clients most often tell us they regret. The version of you worth photographing is the one who's here today.
Nerves, posing and what it feels like
I've never done this before and I feel awkward. Will you tell me what to do?
Yes, you'll never be left guessing. 95% of our boudoir clients have never done a shoot like this before. We pose you down to your fingertips, show you where to look and guide every movement. You don't need to know how to be a model. If you can't picture a pose, we'll demonstrate it ourselves first (it's often the funniest part of the day), then let you run with it while the music plays.
Is it normal to feel nervous?
It's completely normal. Most women arrive nervous and hyper-aware of every part of themselves. Typically something shifts by the second outfit, when you stop performing and start enjoying it. Our clients regularly tell us they felt like a pro in no time.
Can I bring a friend or my partner for support?
Yes. A trusted friend, partner or stylist on set can help with clothing, cheer you on and make the day more fun. Choose someone who makes you feel completely comfortable.
Can I choose a female or male photographer?
Yes. Life Portraits has both male and female photographers, so tell us your preference when you enquire. Life Portraits is a female led business, and founder Em is your first preference.
Do I have to be nude or topless?
No. You decide your comfort level, and you stay in control throughout. Plenty of clients shoot in lingerie, bodysuits or an oversized shirt. If you'd like something more revealing, we also create tasteful, elegant, implied-nude imagery. Tell us during planning and we'll shape the session around you.
Privacy and retouching
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT MY IMAGES TO BE SHARED ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
Your images are for your eyes, if you don’t want them shared on social media, that is 100% ok and we will make note of this on your booking. We only share images that we have permission for. Some women love to celebrate their photoshoot, sharing their images on social media (colab posting with us so we can share too), to share their journey with others. Some don’t want them to be shared with anyone, and for their partner. They are your images and this is your choice.
Will you Photoshop my stretch marks or change my body?
We celebrate real women. We use professional lighting, flattering angles and expert posing to make you look incredible in-camera. When we edit, we polish things like colour grading and temporary blemishes or bruises, but we will never artificially morph or alter your body. What you get back is unmistakably you.
Preparing for your shoot
What should I wear to a boudoir shoot?
Wear whatever makes you feel powerful. Lingerie isn't compulsory. Bring a mix, such as lace bodysuits, matching bra and underwear sets, an oversized white shirt, a partners shirt, a sharp blazer or a vintage band tee. For a pre-wedding session, bring your veil, shoes and the silky gown you'll wear on the wedding morning, and we'll build a set of images around that theme. We help you plan your wardrobe once you book, then mix and match your pieces on the day. OR some women go nude, this is ok too - this is art and capturing the female body is a beautiful thing.
How many outfits should I bring?
Bring a few more than your package includes so we have options to choose from. Our Mini session (30 minutes) includes 2-3 outfits, the Silver session (1 hour) includes 3-4 outfits, and the Gold session (2 hours) includes 7-8 outfits.
Should I get my hair, makeup and tan done?
We highly recommend professional hair and makeup. It helps you look flawless under studio lighting and gives you a confidence boost before you step in front of the camera. It also turns the day into a pampering experience.
For a tan, a natural to dark spray tan looks beautiful on camera. Have it done one or two days before your shoot so it settles and doesn't transfer onto your outfits. A professional or at-home tan both work, and going a little darker than usual shows up better in photos. Don't worry about watch tan lines, as we edit those out.
Where do boudoir shoots take place?
We work across South East Queensland, including luxury homes with pools, industrial studios and gyms, and beaches. Many clients love a luxury house for the bedroom and bathroom settings. We can also photograph you in your own home if you'd prefer. You can browse all our locations in our location gallery.

We then professionally edit your selections and deliver them in a final online gallery. You can also order artwork like albums and wall art to display your images at home.
Can I do a boudoir shoot as a gift or before my wedding?
Yes. A boudoir session is one of the most popular pre-wedding and anniversary gifts. It's a private, romantic present your partner will treasure, and it's just as meaningful as a keepsake for you. We suggest a wedding boudoir 8 weeks before the wedding so we have plenty of time to get your images back to create any printed products. You can also book an intimate couples session together.
Is a boudoir shoot worth it?
Most clients say the value isn't in the lingerie or the lighting. It's in how they feel afterwards, and in the images they get to keep. These photos are a tangible reminder of your strength and a milestone you achieved for yourself. A lot of our clients come back year after year for the feeling.
Ready to book your boudoir session?
You don't need a strict diet, six weeks of gym prep or any experience. You need one decision: that you're ready to see yourself the way we already see you.
